Object and environment work in improvisation is more than symbolism or mimicry, it’s a physical manifestation of your and your scene partners’ imaginations—the ship that allows your creativity to be unfurled. This foundational work of American Improvised Theatre was crafted by Viola Spolin in the 1930s and developed by Paul Sills at Second City, the Compass, and his award-winning work on Broadway with Story Theatre. Sills reminds us that the improviser’s work is to “make the invisible visible and the strange more familiar.”

Drawing from Spolin’s work, this process-oriented course will provide tools to help you use space work in a practical way, while delving into the brain science (and a bit of the woo-woo) behind it. This course is great for practiced improvisers looking to flesh out their skillset for performance, for the explorer wanting to take risks in a kind and challenging environment, and for all of those players who wish to explore the unknown.

Adrienne Flagg has her feet firmly planted in both the scripted and improvised worlds. She trained in New York at the New Actors Workshop with Gene Hackman, Paul Sills, Mike Nichols, and Elaine May. She then continued her work with Paul Sills—son of Viola Spolin and founder of Second City—at his barn in Wisconsin and performed with Dan Castellaneta in Dick Schaal’s improv ensemble in Los Angeles. Upon returning to Portland in 1994, Adrienne focused on performing and directing improv and creating new plays with her company Toad City Productions. She was a founding member of Badass Theatre and Portland Theatre Brigade and Creative Director of the IFCC for the nonprofit’s final 5 years. Adrienne has directed plays for Stark Raving Theatre, Integrity, and JANE and worked with young people throughout the region, including with DaVinci Arts Middle School, Young Musicians and Artists, and the Portland Theatre Brigade, which she founded in 1999. She has acted in plays with Artists Rep, Miracle Theatre, JAW for PCS, and Portland Shakespeare Project and won the 2005 Drammy for Best Actress. Her 2017 production of “Note to Self,” which netted her a nomination for Best Director, won the Drammy for Best Ensemble. Adrienne was a member of the Brody Theater, performs occasionally with Bridge City Improv and Fake Radio, and improvises regularly with The Knock Outs and Broad Selection.
